Mobile Augmented Reality for Outdoor PoI Enrichment
This use case aims to employ 5G/B5G technologies, augmented reality (AR), federated learning (FL), and edge computing to increase the engagement of tourists in outdoor points of interest (PoIs). The use case is implemented as an Android application that will allow users to learn more about different PoIs (buildings, monuments, squares) by directing their smartphones' cameras toward the target location. Using AR, the app can overlay information and interactive mixed-reality elements onto a user's screen to create a dynamic experience. Privacy is also maintained because federated learning does not transfer user data. Instead of raw data, model updates are sent to the edge servers, reducing the amount of data transferred and ensuring faster and more localised responses. The use case was designed with an initial deployment at the POLITEHNICA Bucharest campus in mind, with the final goal of later extending it to other locations, creating potential partnerships with local businesses. The project’s orthogonal aim is also to demonstrate how 5G/B5G infrastructures can enable immersive, secure, and educational tourism experiences.
