5G-SHIELD

The 5G-SHIELD use case, set in manufacturing and logistics unloading areas, focuses on enhancing safety for operations involving Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) by creating a presence awareness system.

The goal is to ensure the safety of personnel operating near AGVs in dynamic, crowded unloading zones, thereby minimising collision risks and improving operational efficiency.


The core concept is the  Presence Awareness enabled by a time-aware and position-aware private 5G network.
As for the technology Integration, the system leverages 5G mmWave communications for low-latency connectivity and high-precision positioning, combined with data fusion from camera systems and radio signals to enhance positional accuracy to the cm-level.


In terms of safety mechanism, vrtual perimeters and safety zones are dynamically established around AGVs based on their real-time position and trajectory.


Worker Alerting: Workers are equipped with 5G-enabled wearable AR headsets.

  • Technical Solution (i.e. development, integration,…): The 5G-SHIELD technical solution is a private 5G mmWave testbed at the MADE Competence Center, relying on URLLC and Edge Computing. The core innovation is 5G Positioning through Vision/Radio Data Fusion (JCAS) to track AGVs and workers with positioning accuracy.
