MEC-enabled Perception Sensor Health Monitoring for Automated Vehicles (MEC-VMS)
Lightweight diagnostics running on the vehicle continuously evaluate the operational condition of cameras, LiDAR and GNSS/IMU sensors. When sensor degradation is detected, a structured anomaly event is generated and transmitted to the nearest MEC node using ENVELOPE Edge Discovery and QoS on Demand (QoD) APIs.
Temporary uplink enhancement is requested only when needed, ensuring reliable data transmission while avoiding unnecessary network resource consumption. At the MEC, AI-based modules confirm and classify anomalies.
The experiment validates a closed-loop vehicle–network–edge workflow under real 5G and MEC conditions at the ENVELOPE Italian Trial Site in Turin.

This use case is replicable
High level of replicability : 61 < LR < 80
Good level of replicability: 31 < LR < 60
Low level of replicability: 00 < LR < 30
- Technical Solution (i.e. development, integration,…): MEC-VMS is an event-driven sensor health monitoring solution for connected vehicles. Vehicle diagnostics detect sensor degradation and send structured events to MEC using CAMARA APIs (QoD, Edge Discovery). Temporary uplink enhancement ensures reliable transmission. MEC AI validates anomalies.
- Legal Aspects (any Specific regulation) The solution complies with GDPR and relevant EU digital regulations. Data minimization and anonymisation principles are applied where applicable. No high-risk AI or personal identification processing is involved.
- Solution Implementation Hardware: Commercial off-the-shelf hardware including vehicle on-board computing (e.g., NVIDIA Jetson), automotive sensors (camera, LiDAR, GNSS/IMU), 5G communication module, and MEC edge server infrastructure.
- Linked Products (components/parts): Vehicle diagnostic module, event handling component, CAMARA QoD API, CAMARA Edge Discovery API, MEC-based anomaly validation module, 5G connectivity infrastructure.
