Collaborative robotics towards an early wildfire detection concept

The trial scenarios demonstrate the use case innovations through an integrated operational storyline. In a remote forest or peri-urban forest area , a B5G system with exposed 3GPP APIs operates as a key enabling technology for public-safety operations under wildfire risk conditions. Τhe exposed network APIs support centralised location estimation without requiring any dedicated application on the user device, while also enabling the provision of network and application data to AI functions for smoke and fire detection. In this setting, smoke or fire can be detected at an early stage through real-time analysis of HD/4K video streams captured by a 5G camera based on customer-premises-equipment / Wi-Fi 6 (CPE/Wi-Fi 6) connectivity (step 1 in Figure 1). Once a potential event is identified, alerts are forwarded to a control room, where a user-friendly web-based interface enables centralised monitoring, live visualisation of the deployed cameras, access to previous events, and service-performance awareness for the relevant stakeholders (2).  Following fire detection, the system initiates a victim-localisation workflow that exploits network-based location information from different cells and intelligent analytics to estimate and prioritise possible casualty locations within the hazardous cell (3). In parallel, a mission UAV is dispatched to provide aerial imagery and enhance situational awareness, while a robotic dog is deployed towards the highest-priority areas in order to operate in locations that may be difficult or unsafe for human responders to access directly, such as dense vegetation or smoke-affected zones (4). The live video streams from the UAV and the robotic dog are processed by AI functions that support detection, tracking, and event annotation, with the resulting operational picture delivered to operators and first responders (5).
